Alt Tab Immediately crashed, computer restarted#664

E

Alt Tab Immediately crashed, computer restarted. This has happened 3 times in the past week. Today I had just moved outside of our new FMS, had map open, finished typing a message in Side Chat, got 2 replies, then Alt-Tabbed. Computer froze, 2nd monitor lost signal, then main monitor lost signal, then PC restarted on it’s own.

Heyo, I’m not sure that is WW2 Online related. I had the same thing happening to me when I was playing GTA 5 Roleplay and it turns out my PSU was going out. You can open up event viewer to find any system errors that are causing the unexpected restart, and then it will have an associated .DMP file and you can run that through through a Complier and it will give you your error codes.

Your DXDIAG are showing some exact same faults my were throwing. “VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE” However the Chat Gpt Gremlins have a different take on your issue based on your hardware/software combination. 🎮

“Key Point Up Front

WWII Online is a DX9/DX11-era engine that stresses:

Legacy DirectX paths

Single-threaded draw calls

Driver compatibility layers

On RTX 40-series + Windows 11 24H2, this combination is notoriously sensitive to driver scheduling changes.

Your crashes are still GPU TDR failures, just triggered by a different engine.

🔴 What’s actually happening (WWII Online context)
1️⃣ Why WWII Online triggers 0x116 / 0x117

WWII Online:

Uses very old rendering code

Makes long, blocking GPU calls

Does not yield cleanly to modern WDDM scheduling

Result:

Windows thinks the GPU has “hung”
→ Triggers TDR
→ Driver reset (0x117)
→ Eventually fails (0x116 BSOD)

This is classic with legacy engines on modern GPUs.

2️⃣ Why your RTX 4070 Ti SUPER makes it worse

Ironically, faster GPUs increase risk here:

GPU finishes work too fast

Driver waits on CPU/game thread

Scheduler misdetects a stall

TDR fires incorrectly

This is well-known with DX9/DX11 titles on Ada Lovelace.

3️⃣ Why Windows 11 24H2 matters

Your build:

Windows 11 Home 24H2 (Build 26200)
WDDM 3.2

24H2 introduced:

New GPU timeout heuristics

More aggressive hang detection

Tighter scheduling windows

Old engines trip these safeguards.

🔍 Evidence from your report
Signal Meaning
0x116 / 0x117 loop GPU timeout reset
0x141 GPU engine reset
c000009a Driver allocation failure during reset
No WHEA Not CPU / RAM
No DXDiag errors Not misconfigured

This is 100% software-layer instability, not hardware failure.

✅ WWII Online–specific fix path (tested & effective)
🔧 STEP 1 — Disable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling

Mandatory for this game

Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings
➡ Turn OFF Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
➡ Reboot

This alone fixes many WWII Online crashes.

🔧 STEP 2 — Roll back NVIDIA driver (important)

Your current driver (32.0.15.9159) is bad for legacy DX.

Use DDU in Safe Mode, then install:

✅ 537.58 Studio (best legacy DX compatibility)
or
✅ 546.33 Game Ready

Do not use 55x–59x drivers.

🔧 STEP 3 — Force legacy-friendly NVIDIA settings

NVIDIA Control Panel → Program Settings → WWII Online:

Low Latency Mode: Off

Power Management: Prefer maximum performance

Threaded Optimization: Off

Vertical Sync: Off (or app-controlled)

Shader Cache: On (default)

These reduce driver stalls.

🔧 STEP 4 — Cap FPS (very important for old engines)

WWII Online does not behave well uncapped.

Use NVIDIA Control Panel or RTSS:

Cap to 60 or 90 FPS

This prevents runaway render loops that trigger TDR”

I have had some power related issues as well. Not sure if my GPU is crapping out, but I’ll look into some of these settings. Thanks cal

I would look at the power supply, get a program that can watch the voltage to the memory, video card and the CPU.

If it can not keep up with high demand it maybe time upgrade the power supply

It’s a 850w power supply. And only a year old. Not that it’s not a possibility, but I don’t think it’s the PSU. I will however look into that. Thanks for the suggestion. Never had issues with my brand new RTX 4070, ONLY with the used 4070ti super I recently acquired.

Currently I’m running 2 instances of wwiiol, steam and organic, bodycam, and furmark2, and prime95. Image shows power draw, etc. I’ll see how long it runs before a crash. 🤷

Gpu running at 100% might have an effect

Right….trying to stress everything out, particularly the GPU, since it is where I believe the issue lies. It did crash, due to eventually maxing out 16gb of vram, lol.

May have been a moddiy custom GPU 12vhpwr cable. I switched to the two standard power supply cables and a 12vhpwr adapter.

Stress testing pushed the GPU power load to 275+ watts. I’m running the same games as earlier, No crashes yet. Will update in a couple of days.

You can close this. It is in fact my 4070ti super crapping out. Have been running my old rx580 with absolutely no issues.

O

Thank you for the infomation. How did you find it … just swapping out the card?

Yes. Same issue presented itself when I use a different power supply. Immediately. No issues at all with a different card.
